Piyano çalmaya 4 yaşında başlayan Petrescu, İsveç’te klasik müzik ve caz konservatuvarı ile Finlandiya’da Helsinki Sibelius Akademisi’nde eğitim gördü. Pori Caz Festivali’nde daha 15 yaşındayken caz dinleyicisinin ilgisini çeken sanatçı, 1989′da Martial Solal Caz – piyanosu yarışmasında ikincilik, 1992′de Bükreş Caz Festivali’nde de birincilik ödülünü kazandı. Montreux, Paris, Hague ve Kopenhag caz festivallerinde sahneye çıkan Petrescu, Arturo Sandoval, Toots Thielemans, Al Jarreau, Didier Lockwood, Richie Beirach, Tony Williams, Ulf Wakenius, Ray Charles Band, Lars Danielsson, Riccardo Del Fra, Ron McClure, Jean-Franqois Jenny-Clar gibi sanatçılarla birlikte çaldı....
